Confessions on online classes

The lockdown has certainly put the writing freaks under unusual studying conditions that have generated a set of challenges but also many new opportunities to seize.

“Indeed, they are giving rhythm to my everyday life. Now, I cannot imagine a day without using my computer. Crazy, isn't it?” says Yousra M. when asked about her perceptions of online classes. Technology has become all of a sudden, the only link between students and their teachers. “Thus, it has gained an important status in our everyday life.” replies Saad S. Neither students, nor teachers were well prepared for this drastic change in their daily routines on the one hand, or in the educational system on the other. In that regard, Yousra praises the fact that “virtual classes are reinventing education.” “In the aftermath of this health crisis, the school experience will change and technology will have a bigger role in teaching.”

Technology as an opportunity to renew the educational system is rather mitigated by Saad S. that perceives it as an imperfect way to work or study with the risk of internet suddenly shutting down, at any moment. Therefore, Saad suggests that it would have been a better way “if we had acknowledged the importance of technology before the start of the pandemic, and kept in check the quality of our computers and routers. “

This being said, can we now catch up with technology’s fast pace and make it an important part of the learning process?

The writing freaks think for the most part that virtual classes could be a stress-free alternative to the hectic school life. As Yasmine T., some find it an opportunity to do better (…) “I am faster and maybe better for the assignments or my tests. Also, a break is refreshing. I think that we can all focus on the things that we don’t understand from a lesson, and take the necessary time to better grasp it”.

Others such as Selma B., describe a sense of calm and quiet “not being constantly around people, which can be anxiety inducing, while having the opportunity to try new things online outside of homework”. Similarly, Saad describes a sense of freedom allowed by “doing homework whenever you want” in a relaxed and peaceful setting.

That said, according to Yousra, “virtual online classes can be somehow unfair because they require technological supplies which cannot be afforded by everyone”. However, they remain a great alternative to experience learning in an autonomous, stress-free and determined way. As Mohamed L. concludes :“ I do not lose my courage in the face of an invisible enemy, and I am ready to work until the 4th of July”.
